Who We Are
Welcome to The Plum Penguin, where sentiment meets craftsmanship. Based in the heart of Birmingham, UK, we specialise in crafting personalised gift plaques that make for the perfect keepsake or heartfelt gift. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Laura and Richard, our business began in the backroom of our home and has since grown into a thriving company with its own dedicated unit and a small but passionate team.
Our Story
It all started at home—Laura’s natural eye for design combined with Richard’s hands-on skill brought our first creations to life. What began as a hobby soon turned into a full-time venture, fuelled by the joy our plaques brought to others.
In those early days, we were lucky to have the incredible support of Richard’s Dad, Graham. He was instrumental in setting up the business—helping build the workshop, install equipment, and organise the factory layout. More than that, he was Richard’s best friend and a constant source of encouragement. Though he’s sadly no longer with us, Graham’s presence is still felt in everything we do.
As the business grew, so did our team—and our sense of purpose. While we’ve expanded our space and capacity, we remain deeply rooted in the same family values that started it all.
What We Do
Using high-precision laser machines and printers, we create bespoke gift plaques in a variety of styles and materials. Every plaque is made with care and attention to detail, resulting in a unique piece that captures your message perfectly—be it for a milestone, a memory, or just to show someone you care.
Meet the Team
Laura – The creative heart of The Plum Penguin, Laura leads the design process from start to finish. Her talent ensures every plaque is visually striking and emotionally meaningful.
Richard – Working closely with our production equipment, Richard brings Laura’s designs to life. He also oversees quality and craftsmanship across every piece.
Dan – Formerly a manager at a local brewery, Dan joined us seven years ago and now manages our factory operations. He’s a pro at running the printers and laser cutters, keeping everything running smoothly day to day.
Sandra – Richard’s mum, and one of our earliest supporters. Sandra still steps in to help with packaging and processing during busy times—and we couldn’t have done it without her. From assembling orders to helping care for our children so we could grow the business, she’s been a rock.
Gianna – Richard’s aunt, Gianna lends a vital hand with packaging and dispatch during peak seasons. Her help ensures your plaques arrive beautifully prepared and on time.
